Save money at work

Being a 9 to 5 office worker can really be tiring for some, especially for those who have families to feed and debts to pay. But, it is all worth it when you get your paycheck at the end of the month. However, the imminent euphoria of seeing new figures in your bank account is immediately gone when you realize that the money received is used to pay the costs you accumulated in getting the paycheck in the first place.

Even at work, your wallet can become lighter. This is due to many reasons, namely the need to buy unnecessary and expensive things when you’re at the office. These things include lunches, coffees, office equipment and stationery. You carry on like this for a few more years at work and you’ll soon come to grasp the fact that the benefits you reap at the end of the month is not sufficient enough to cover your hard work.

Therefore, it is imperative to find ways to save money while at work, to cut down costs and show a much healthier bank balance. For those who are financially ignorant, how to save money may not be your forte. Fortunately, it’s easier than you think and you don’t have to be thrifty in every facet of your life. You just have do a simple analysis of where you spend your money most (in this case; the workplace), and try to cut down. Here are a few tips on how to save money while at work.

  1. Make your own lunch - This midday meal is one of the many reasons you’re spending your money. To most workers, lunch is perhaps the highlight of the day, where you can not only refuel, but also mingle with your colleagues at work. That usually means expensive restaurants and sometimes footing the bill. And although there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s best if you stop going out for lunch and eat at the office, except for special occasions. Many seem to think packing your lunch is only for schoolchildren. It may be so, but if it saves you a few dollars, who the hell cares? Making your own sandwiches and eating them at work saves you money in the long run, since you’re not subjected to the outrageous markup that is so common in sandwich places. Not only that, you can also make lunches that suit your own palate, which is important to the picky eaters and the allergic.
  2. Brew your own coffee - Coffee breaks, like lunches, are also one of those things that keep you going at work. What better way to stay awake in those boring and dreary staff meetings than a steaming mug of fine Arabica beans? However, a cup of your favorite Java is getting more expensive by the day. Let’s say one cup costs $3 and you work 5 days a week with at least 2 coffee breaks per day. That means $1440 per annum. If you save the money on coffee, it can be used to pay the electricity bill, or go into your children’s college fund, even pay an installment on your car.

Saving your money at work is easier than most people think. You just need discipline and a shrewd economical mind.
